Worth knowing

Grew up there? You still need protection.

Many people who grew up in Ghana assume they're protected from malaria. But that protection fades after years living abroad, and children raised outside Ghana never had it. Visiting family is one of the most common ways travelers get malaria, because it feels like going home, not traveling.

What people think

  • I grew up there, I'm fine
  • The kids will be fine with me
  • It's only two weeks

What's true

  • Protection fades after years away
  • Children raised abroad have none
  • One bite is enough

Trip timeline

Your trip, step by step.

  1. 4 to 6 weeks before

Book your Monica travel visit. We review your health, your kids' health and your trip.

  2. At least 10 days before

Get your yellow fever vaccine and certificate at a certified clinic, if you don't already have one. Ghana and Nigeria both require it.

  3. Before you fly

Start your malaria prevention exactly as your clinician tells you. Pack your travel kit.

  4. While you're there

Keep taking it every day. Sleep under a net where you can. Use repellent.

  5. After you're back

Finish the course as prescribed. If you get a fever in the weeks after, see a doctor right away and say where you traveled.
